Purchasing Advice
If you are looking for a new or used Acoustic or Electric Guitar, you should consider following our advice regarding your purchase.
First, you should check the seller's eBay feedback very carefully. If their feedback is high (98% or higher), then you should be free to buy the guitar without hesitancy.
Second, you should learn if the item comes with a return policy. Many sellers will provide at least a 24-hour return policy (if not more), so you can carefully inspect the instrument to see if it performs to your expectations.
Lastly, ensure that the seller sends your guitar via UPS, since other other venders plainly aren't as dependable as UPS. You also want to make sure that your instrument is fully insured, even if you have to pay them extra to do so. Trust me on this one. That last thing you want to see when you open your new Electric Guitar is to see it shattered into a million pieces. Not a good sight.
When You Receive Your Guitar
When you finally get your guitar delivered by UPS from the seller, you will want to inspect it directly. Check that the box doesn't look bent. Also, you will want to ensure that the eBay seller ships the guitar packed inside a hardshell case. If you don't insist on this, you're simply asking for a problem. As with the shipping box, check the case for any signs of misuse or neglect.
Before you unpack the guitar, give it some time to adapt to its different home. I'm not kidding. Wait an hour or two before you take it out of the case, since sudden changes in temperature can cause cracking in the finish.
When you remove the guitar, directly compare it to the photos from the auction. Make sure that the guitar you've received fits the description of the guitar in the auction. Inspect the finish for any discolorations or cracks. Plug it in and check the volume and tone controls to make sure they're working properly. Try out the pickups in various positions also. Look at everything from the strap buttons to the tuners to make sure every "little" part is in place and as described.
If you know how, inspect the neck to make sure the truss rod works right and that the neck isn't warped. If you don't know how to inspect a neck properly, then take the instrument to a qualified repair shop. He can check the guitar for you and probably won't bill more than $25 or so.
If you discover any issues with the guitar, don't worry. Save all the packing materials, and contact the seller immediately. In all likelihood, the seller will want to work with you, so don't be accusatory. Be polite, but be straightforward about wanting to get the problem taken care of as soon as you can. If you can, pay for your instrument with PayPal, since they will include some fundamental buyer protection.
If the harm is due to UPS' neglect, contact them right away. In my experience, UPS will settle claims fairly, but you will still want to be resovled (but polite). Keep a record of the customer service people you talk with and save all emails.
